Head of Sales and Marketing, Consumer Goods - Munster


This mid-sized Munster based organisation has grown to become the largest manufacturer in Ireland in its FMCG category with many years’ experience in developing and producing high quality products for retail, related service channels and private label customers.

Scope of Role:
The purpose of the role is to lead the profitable growth in sales to a very realistic target level of 10% YOY over the next 4 years. The appointee will be required to develop and implement the sales strategy which will involve identifying, targeting and recruiting new international and domestic markets and customers. It will also involve the development of new products to achieve the desired growth in a profitable and sustainable manner.  

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Head of Sales and Marketing will be part of the Senior Leadership team. They will be supported by a dedicated team of account managers and there will be strong interaction and support from R&D/Product Development, Finance and Supply Chain teams

Based in Munster the appointed candidate will:
  • Develop and implement a sales strategy to grow sales as outlined above.
  • Identify and develop business opportunities in new and existing domestic & international markets.
  • Identify potential new product opportunities and work with customers and the internal teams to develop products to fill the identified gaps.
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with current customer base, where possible grow sales to current customers.
  • Provide direction, leadership, support and motivation to the Sales Team.
  • Develop and embed relevant robust sales processes and related dashboard measures of success. These will consistently inform and guide the Sales Team’s performance while also providing clarity on monthly sales progress against agreed Key Performance Indicators to the senior management team.
  • Work closely with the senior management team and other functions in the business to ensure the smooth delivery of sales growth and new product introductions.
  • Develop and ensure effective communication of a more coherent brand platform for the company to communicate with existing and potential customers.

Key measurement criteria / accountabilities:
  • Growth in profitable sales.
  • Growth in new markets and recruitment of new customers.
  • Retention, positive engagement and sales growth with current customers.
  • Development and successful launch of new products.

The Successful Candidate will possess the following Characteristics, Skills & Experience:

  • Qualified to degree level with a business or technical qualification allied to good IT skills and competency in the use of social media as a communication and marketing tool.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in an FMCG sales role with Multi National or International selling experience in a medium or large organisation. Obvious evidence of the resourcefulness required to deliver in growth oriented mid-sized organisation.
  • Experience in management of Irish, UK and European Retailers and related Service Channel Operators.
  • Proven successful experience of leading, effectively developing and managing the performance of a sales team.
  • Strong contacts within the retail and / or related service channel sectors in the target markets.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Good numerical ability and understanding of margins, promotions and FMCG industry financial norms.
  • Imaginative, with the ability to read trends, visualise gaps in the market and present these gaps to customers as a viable product propositions.
  • As is the norm in mid-sized organisations, there is a requirement for multitasking and flexibility in senior managers.
  • Obvious ability to work well and collaborate with other members of the senior management team.
  • Strong proven credentials in communicating with and motivating sales teams.
  • The company has the desire, resources and building blocks in place to grow significantly over the next few years. The appointed person should have the deep proven experience and relevant contacts allied to the energy, drive and commitment to achieve this growth.
  • Agile and flexible in mind-set and able to work on several projects at one time.
  • Preferably based in Munster; spending most of the first 12-18 months on site to deeply understand the business, get to know the people and the key stakeholders to support their success.
  • Time in the relevant markets to be serviced as required – with a likely level of 20% of the time abroad.
